README for DIGITAL FX!32 V1.4 DIGITAL FX!32 lets you install and run x86 Win32 applications on your Windows NT Alpha system. This file provides the following installation and other release-specific information for DIGITAL FX!32 V1.4: * [1]What's New in DIGITAL FX!32 V1.4 * [2]Installing DIGITAL FX!32 and Win32 x86 Applications * [3]General Restrictions * [4]General Application Information * [5]Configuring DIGITAL FX!32 to Enhance System Performance * [6]Specific Application Information Please see the DIGITAL FX!32 website for information about technical support and additions to information contained in this document: [7]http://www.digital.com/amt/fx32/ Refer to the on-line help for complete information about DIGITAL FX!32, and to answer any questions you may have about topics described in this file. You can access the on-line help from the Start>Programs>Fx!32 menu. 1. What's New in DIGITAL FX!32 V1.4 DIGITAL FX!32 V1.4 provides broader application compatibility and enhanced performance. DIGITAL FX!32 V1.4 also includes the following features and enhancements: * Support for Microsoft Windows Terminal Server. You can use the Add/Remove x86 Programs Control Panel on an Alpha-based Terminal Server to install x86 applications for use in a multi-user environment. Applications installed in this manner have received limited testing. * Enhanced Photoshop filter performance. * Support for Adobe Acrobat Capture 2.0, Autodesk AutoCAD LT 97, Autodesk AutoCAD R14, Corel Ventura 8, Jasc Paint Shop Pro 5.0, and Microsoft FrontPage 98. * Enhanced support for Lotus 1-2-3 97. * Enhancements to the FX!32 Manager. The FX!32 Manager provides more detailed status information in the Work List. In addition, the functionality of the menu option Options>Optimize Application Now is changed. Previously, if you selected that menu option, the selected application was the first application to be optimized at the next scheduled optimization time. Now, if you select that menu option, optimization of the selected application begins immediately. * When DIGITAL FX!32 V1.4 is enabled, you can invoke the FX!32 Manager by double-clicking on the FX!32 icon on the Windows NT Taskbar. * Due to enhancements to the FX!32 V1.4 Optimizer that increase the performance of some applications, code that is optimized in FX!32 V1.4 is not compatible with versions of FX!32 released before V1.3. Therefore, if you intend to install FX!32 V1.4 and then completely uninstall it to run a version of FX!32 released before V1.3, you need to back up any existing optimized code with the pre-V1.3 version of FX!32 before you install FX!32 V1.4. 2. Installing DIGITAL FX!32 and Win32 x86 Applications Perform the following steps to install DIGITAL FX!32 and then install and run your Win32 x86 applications on Alpha Windows NT 4.0. To upgrade a previous version of FX!32 to FX!32 V1.4, you only need to install FX!32 V1.4. You do not need to uninstall or disable the previous version of FX!32, nor do you need to uninstall or reinstall x86 applications. 2.1 Prerequisites DIGITAL FX!32 requires Alpha Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3 or later. Service Packs correct a number of problems that you can experience when using Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. You can obtain the latest Service Packs from the following URL: [8]http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/default.htm You must reinstall DIGITAL FX!32 V1.4 after you reinstall Alpha Windows NT but you do not need to reinstall FX!32 after you install a Windows NT Service Pack. 2.2 Installing DIGITAL FX!32 Use the following procedure to install DIGITAL FX!32: 1. Log into the system as Administrator. Ensure that you have at least 20MB free disk space in the directory in which you are installing FX!32. 2. Install DIGITAL FX!32 as follows: + If you received a self-extracting executable file, run it and follow the installation instructions. + If you received a set of diskettes, run SETUP.EXE from DISK1 and follow the installation instructions. At the end of the installation procedure, the system prompts you to restart your system to complete the installation. By default, the installer places the DIGITAL FX!32 files and a set of sample files in the \fx32 directory. The sample files are Win32 x86 applications that you can run under DIGITAL FX!32 to verify your installation. That's it! You are now running DIGITAL FX!32 and you can install and run Win32 x86 applications on your Alpha Windows NT system. Refer to the section about [9]Installing Win32 x86 Applications for information about installing x86 applications. NOTE: If you intend to install FX!32 V1.4 and then completely uninstall it to run a version of FX!32 released before V1.3, you need to back up any existing optimized code with the pre-V1.3 version of FX!32 before you install FX!32 V1.4. You can restore that optimized code after you uninstall V1.4. 2.3 Uninstalling DIGITAL FX!32 V1.4 You must completely uninstall V1.4 before you attempt to install a version of FX!32 released before V1.3. For example, if FX!32 V1.4 is currently installed on your system, you need to uninstall V1.4 before installing V1.2. When you uninstall FX!32 V1.4, ensure that you select (check) all of the following options in the FX!32 Uninstaller dialog box: * Delete ALL FX!32 program files * Delete FX!32 specific registry entries * Delete FX!32 installation group/folder * Delete ALL FX!32 database files If you do not uninstall FX!32 V1.4 before installing an earlier version of FX!32, you need to reinstall V1.4 and then uninstall V1.4 completely to ensure that the correct registry modifications are made. After you uninstall V1.4, you can then install previous versions of FX!32. If you completely uninstall FX!32 V1.4 and install a version of FX!32 released before V1.3, you need to restore backed up optimized code. 2.4 Installing Win32 x86 Applications Use one of the following methods to install Win32 x86 applications: * The DIGITAL FX!32 installer utility, Install X86 Application, which is located in both the Start>Programs>Fx!32 menu and the \fx32 directory. Invoke the utility and select the application installer file. * The Control Panel option Add/Remove x86 Programs. Invoke the utility and select the application installer file. * The Install X86 Application shortcut icon on the Desktop. Drag and drop the application installer file on the Install X86 Application shortcut icon. The utilities Add/Remove x86 Programs and Install X86 Application install only x86 applications. If you receive a message that indicates you are running the wrong version of Windows, the corresponding application is native Alpha and you can install it without the FX!32 installer utility. After you install your applications, they run transparently under DIGITAL FX!32. Refer to the on-line help index for Application installation for additional information. 3. General Restrictions The following restrictions apply to DIGITAL FX!32 V1.4: * DIGITAL FX!32 V1.4 supports only Win32 x86 applications that run under Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. That includes most 32-bit Windows 95 applications. * To install any x86 application, be sure to use the FX!32 Install X86 Application utility on the Desktop, in the \fx32 directory, or in the Start>Programs>Fx!32 menu. You can also use the Control Panel option Add/Remove x86 Programs. Do not install x86 applications by running installation programs directly. * DIGITAL FX!32 V1.4 requires Alpha Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3. * You must reinstall DIGITAL FX!32 if you reinstall Windows NT. You do not need to reinstall FX!32 V1.4 after installing Service Packs. * DIGITAL FX!32 does not support x86 system debuggers or device drivers; if possible, use the corresponding native Alpha system components instead. * DIGITAL FX!32 supports only those Windows NT APIs that are supported under Alpha Windows NT. * Although DIGITAL FX!32 V1.4 supports ActiveX Controls, these Controls frequently do not run within Microsoft Internet Explorer when Internet Explorer attempts to automatically download and install ActiveX Controls from a web page. The reason for this behavior is because the download mechanism usually queries the architecture of the client system and refuses to run the Control if it is not available for that architecture. DIGITAL FX!32 does not currently have a way to overcome this check. * If you used a previous version of FX!32 to run x86 Services by adding the "FX!32Server" dependency to the "DependOnService" registry entry, you need to remove that dependency before you use DIGITAL FX!32 V1.4. * The silent installation feature of DIGITAL FX!32 is currently not supported. * On a system that contains more than one bootable version of Windows NT, a separate installation of DIGITAL FX!32 must be performed on each version and each installation must contain a local FX!32 database in a unique directory. * DIGITAL FX!32 V1.4 does not support x86 compiler IDEs (Integrated Development Environments). In general, compiler IDE's (such as those for various C, C++, and FORTRAN compilers) are hard-coded for a particular architecture and access the system in ways that are not supported by DIGITAL FX!32. This restriction does not apply to interpreters, such as Microsoft Visual Basic. * Because the Lahey FORTRAN compiler utilizes currently unsupported behavior by adding values to the bottom of the floating-point stack, applications that are compiled using the Lahey FORTRAN compiler are not supported. * For applications that support plugins, extensions, and add-ins, DIGITAL FX!32 supports: * All same-architecture interfaces: x86-to-x86 and Alpha-to-Alpha. * The following cross-architecture interfaces between Alpha and x86 (both directions): * Public COM (OLE) interfaces, such as those used by the Insert Object command in Microsoft Office applications, and those used in shell extensions. * Control-panel interfaces (You must run these from the \sys32x86 directory) * ISAPI (Internet Server API) * Multimedia CODECs * File Manager extensions * SNMP extensions * Winsock service providers * Photoshop plugins * ODBC driver connections (this support has received limited testing) Do not run Help from a native Alpha application while an x86 application has an open Help window. Note that you can run Help from an x86 application when a native Alpha Help window is open with no compatibility conflicts. Do not install both DIGITAL FX!32 and the Microsoft Wx86 emulator on the same system. DIGITAL FX!32 has been tested only with the US version of Windows NT and is only supported with that version. DIGITAL FX!32 should work with most non-US versions of Windows NT, but that is not explicitly supported. Applications, such as WinZip, can create temporary directories and run executable images in those temporary directories. When the application closes an image, DIGITAL FX!32 begins to optimize that image. During optimization, that file (the image) is in use and the temporary directory cannot be deleted. Ensure that you do not capitalize the executable file instx86.exe when you invoke the utility Install x86 Application from the command line. If this file name is capitalized, the system hangs. When Work List entries are set to either "Process" or "Keep" in the global Preferences dialog box, and you change views in the FX!32 Manager to either the Work List or the Application List, ensure that no application names are in edit mode when you attempt to change views. Doing so causes FX!32 to abnormally terminate. For example, if you are viewing the Work List, and you click on an application name twice to enter edit mode, do not select the option View> Application List until that application name is no longer in edit mode. 4. General Application Information This section provides general information about applications as well as the interaction between DIGITAL FX!32 and Windows NT. Common Shared Files Directories * Some application packages under Windows NT 4.0, such as Microsoft Office, install into a common shared directory those components that are shared by various applications within the package and by other applications. (For example, a spell checker is a common component.) With DIGITAL FX!32, both x86 and Alpha common shared components can reside on the same system without conflict. On Windows NT 4.0, installers typically install applications in the \Program Files directory and shared components in the subdirectory, \Program Files\Common Files. DIGITAL FX!32 redirects x86 applications to the directory, \Program Files (x86), and x86 shared components to the subdirectory, \Program Files (x86)\Common Files. This segregation avoids conflicts between similarly named Alpha and x86 files and prevents applications from attempting to use shared components of the opposite architecture, which is not supported. Components that cannot be successfully shared across architectures are segregated and operate correctly. Components that can be successfully shared across architectures, such as OLE objects, continue to function in their correct cross-architectural manner. Control Panels * The system does not display x86 application Control Panels in the Control Panel window. Those Control Panels are located in the x86 System Directory, %SystemRoot%\sys32x86, as files with the extension .CPL, such as FINDFAST.CPL. As a workaround, use the Windows NT Explorer to open them from there. InstallSHIELD * Problems have been reported with applications that are installed and uninstalled by InstallSHIELD. At application installation, the InstallSHIELD Wizard can display an error message, such as one that reports a general transfer error. This problem is likely the result of DIGITAL FX!32 being installed on your system before any x86 applications that are installed by InstallSHIELD. When you install DIGITAL FX!32, it installs an Alpha version of the file %SystemRoot%\uninst.exe on your system. When x86 applications are subsequently installed, InstallSHIELD notices that this file exists and does not overwrite it with the x86 version of uninst.exe. As a workaround, rename the existing uninst.exe to uninst_alpha.exe and then reinstall your x86 application. Retain both versions of the file uninst.exe for future use. At this point the system can display an error message if you subsequently attempt to uninstall an Alpha application. To uninstall an Alpha application that requires the file uninst.exe, rename the x86 version of this file to uninst_x86.exe and rename the Alpha version to uninst.exe. Multiple Architecture Distributions * CD-ROM distributions that use AutoRun (that begin installation directly from the CD-ROM without your intervention) and contain binaries for both Win32 x86 and Alpha can make incorrect installation assumptions and incorrectly install the x86 binaries on your Alpha system. You can avoid this incorrect behavior by exiting out of the initial automatic SETUP and then running SETUP from the CD-ROM, which correctly installs the Alpha binaries. Editing Images * The image editor is a Windows NT component, used by several applications (such as Adobe Pagemaker 6.0, Macromedia Freehand 5.0, and Microsoft Word 7.0) to insert an image into a document. Problems have been reported for both the x86 and native Alpha versions of the image editor. It can fail regardless of the application from which it is invoked, and errors occur when DIGITAL FX!32 is not involved. The general workaround is to delete an empty image display and reinsert the desired image into the application. 5. Configuring DIGITAL FX!32 to Enhance System Performance DIGITAL FX!32 can consume a significant amount of a system's resources while performing code optimization. You can use several techniques to enhance system performance by modifying scheduled optimization times as well as optimizing code on a host system and making that code available to other, target, systems. Refer to the on-line help for additional information about Scheduling FX!32 Optimizations and Making Optimized Code from a Host System Available to Target Systems. 6. Specific Application Information This section provides information about specific applications that have been tested with FX!32 V1.4. The release notes for Windows NT 4.0 also contain specific application information and you should look there for other information about applications in which you are interested. Adobe Acrobat Capture 2.0 * If you plan to use to a scanner with Acrobat Capture, ensure that you use a scanner that supports TWAIN. DIGITAL FX!32 V1.4 does not support ASPI32. In addition, ensure that you run the last known Sentinal Driver from Rainbow ([10]http://www.rainbow.com). * Perform the following steps to install Acrobat Capture with a scanner. 1. Install and configure a scanner to run on your Alpha system. 2. Install Acrobat Capture. When you install Acrobat Capture, ensure that you do not install the PDF Writer component. For example, during installation, you need to uncheck the check box for the PDF Writer component. If you do not uncheck that option, the application is not successfully installed. In addition, do not select any scanners during the installation. 3. Reboot the system. When the system reboots, it displays the following error message: "At least one service or driver failed during system startup. Use Event Viewer to examine the event log for details." When you click on the OK button, the system continues to reboot. 4. Access the Devices Control Panel. Select ASPI32 from the list and click on the Startup button. The system displays the Devices dialog box. In this dialog box, change the Startup Type to Manual, and click on the OK button. Close the Devices Control Panel. 5. Before you invoke Acrobat Capture, run the program capserve.exe, which by default is installed in the following directory: %Installation_Drive%\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Capture\Capserve\capserve.exe. Adobe Photoshop 5.0 * Do not use the Resize Image Wizard to resize images. If you select the menu option Help>Resize Image, the Resize Image Wizard is invoked and cannot be closed. As a workaround, select the menu option Image>Image Size and enter the new image properties in the Image Size dialog box. Autodesk AutoCAD LT 97 * When you install AutoCAD LT 97, the system displays two error messages. You can safely dismiss these error messages. The installation is successfully completed. * Do not click on the Help button in any dialog box. For example, if you click on the Help button in the Units dialog box, the application abnormally terminates. * Do not press the key to invoke AutoCAD help. If you press the key to invoke AutoCAD help, the system displays an error message. When you click on the OK button to dismiss that error message, the application abnormally terminates. * Do not press the key to exit AutoCAD help. If you press the key to exit AutoCAD help, the application abnormally terminates. Autodesk AutoCAD R14 * Ensure that you install the native Alpha version of Microsoft Active Movie before you install the AutoCAD R14 Learning Assistant CD. You can install Active Movie independently, or when you install the native Alpha version Microsoft Internet Explorer. If you do not install native Alpha Active Movie, then you cannot install the AutoCAD Learning Assistant CD. When native Alpha Active Movie is installed, and you attempt to install the AutoCAD Learning Assistant CD, the system displays the following error message: "Setup was not able to register active movie control." This error message refers to the Intel version of Active Movie which is included in the distribution. When you click on the OK button to dismiss that error message, the installation is successfully completed. * When you install AutoCAD R14, the OLE/ADI printer driver is not successfully installed. When the application installation is 98% complete, the system displays the following error message: "Error installing OLE/ADI Printer Driver." With the exception of this printer driver, the application is successfully installed. Corel Ventura 8.0 * The Refresh option is not displayed in the directory context menu. For example, if you click on the Open Publication icon, browse to a directory, and click on the button Add Directory, you can specify a new directory name. When you right click on the blank area of the dialog box, the system displays a context menu. The option Refresh is not available. * Do not export Windows bitmap files. For example, if you embed a picture in a publication, save the file, and then select the menu option File>Export Picture, and specify a Windows Bitmap file, the picture is not correctly exported. * Do not use the menu option Insert>Object. If you select that menu option, the system displays the Insert Object dialog box. If you browse for and select a file, click on the OK button in the Browse dialog box, and then click on the OK button in the Insert Object dialog box, the system displays an error message, prompting you to Retry or Cancel. You can neither retry nor cancel successfully, and instead, you need to end the application using the Windows NT Task Manager. Lotus 1-2-3 97 * In template files, do not click on the printer icon to print the file, the envelope icon to send the file, or the question mark for help. If you click on one of those icons, the system displays an error message and the operation is not successfully completed. Instead, to print the file, select the option Print from the File menu. To send the file, select the option Team Mail from the File menu. To access help, select the option Help Topics from the Help menu. * Do not add controls to the Toolbox in the Dialog Editor. For example, in the Dialog Editor, if you select the menu option File>Toolbox Setup>Select All, and click on the OK button, all available controls are added to the Toolbox. After you close the Dialog Editor and you attempt to close the application, the system displays an error message and prompts you to terminate the application. Lotus Approach 97 * If you select the option File> Internet> Publish as Web Pages, you are prompted to name the file and save it. In the HTML Preferences dialog box, if you click on the OK button, the system displays an error message and does not successfully publish the web page. If you select the option "Create index page" in the HTML Preferences dialog box and then click on the OK button, the file is successfully published. Lotus Freelance Graphics 97 * Do not add controls to the Toolbox in the Dialog Editor. For example, in the Dialog Editor, if you select the menu option File>Toolbox Setup>Select All, and click on the OK button, all available controls are added to the Toolbox. After you close the Dialog Editor and you attempt to close the application, the system displays an error message and prompts you to terminate the application. Lotus SmartSuite 97 * If you attempt to use the Control Panel option Add/Remove x86 Programs to uninstall Lotus SmartSuite 97, the system prompts you to terminate the programs Ltsstart, Remind 32, and Suitest before continuing with the uninstall procedure. These programs are not displayed in the Windows NT Task Manager. Perform the following steps to terminate these applications: 1. Remove Lotus Quick Start (Lsstart) and Lotus SmartSuite 97 Registration (Remind32) from the Startup folder. 2. Refresh the system by logging off and then logging back on. 3. Close the Lotus SmartCenter shortcut menu that is displayed across the top of the Desktop by clicking on Lotus and selecting the option Exit SmartCenter. 4. Close the SmartSuite icons along the lower right of the taskbar by right-clicking on them and choosing the option Exit from the pop-up menu. After performing these steps, you can use the utility Add/Remove x86 Programs to successfully uninstall Lotus SmartSuite 97. * You cannot print help topics in SmartSuite 97 applications. For example, if you attempt to print a help topic, the system displays the following error message: "There is not enough memory available for this task. Quit one or more programs to increase available memory, and then try again." The help topic is not printed, nor is it printed if you quit any programs and try again. * If you attempt to exit the SmartCenter toolbar application, the system displays an error message. Click the OK button to exit the application. * Do not attempt to display Help Topics from the SmartCenter 97 Suite Help Drawer. Doing so causes the application to abnormally terminate. As a workaround, select SmartCenter Help Topics by clicking on the Lotus Logo and selecting the option "Help Topics." Lotus WordPro 97 * Do not add controls to the Toolbox in the Dialog Editor. For example, in the Dialog Editor, if you select the menu option File>Toolbox Setup>Select All, and click on the OK button, all available controls are added to the Toolbox. After you close the Dialog Editor and you attempt to close the application, the system displays an error message and prompts you to terminate the application. Macromedia Authorware 4.0 * It is recommended that you use native Alpha Internet Explorer 3.02 with Authorware. Errors have been reported when using Macromedia Authorware with versions of Internet Explorer later than 3.02. * Do not use Package files with Quiz. For example, if you convert the file %Installation_Drive%\Program Files (x86)\Macromedia\Authorware\Tutorial\words.a4p to a Package file, and then attempt to invoke that package file by double-clicking on it in the Windows NT Explorer, the system displays an error message. When you click on the button Continue and then click on the arrow button, the system displays a map of the earth. If you click on the Q button to invoke Quiz, the Quiz does not operate correctly. Click on the X button to exit Quiz. Macromedia Backstage 2.0 * If you attempt to open an HTML file when the Backstage Designer is not running, the system displays the following error message: "Can't launch application." As a workaround, ensure that the Backstage Designer is running before you attempt to open an HTML file. Macromedia Director 6.0 * You cannot create a custom cursor. Matlab 5.2 * Do not select the menu option File>New>M-File in the Matlab command window to invoke the Matlab editor/debugger. If you select that menu option, the system displays an error message. When you click on the OK button to dismiss that error message, you are returned to the Matlab command window. * Do not select the menu option File>Load Workspace to load a workspace. If you select that menu option, that operation is not successfully completed. * Do not select the menu option File>Show Workspace to show a workspace. If you select that menu option, the system displays an error message and the operation is not successfully completed. Microsoft Binder 97 * Ensure that native Alpha Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 is the default browser before you use the menu option Go>Open. If Netscape Navigator is the default browser, the application abnormally terminates after you open a new or existing Binder 97 file and then select the menu option Go>Open. * Do not select the menu option File>Print Binder. If you select that menu option, the system displays error messages and the Binder is not printed. As a workaround, use the menu option Section>Print to print each section individually. * Ensure that an Excel file (*.xls) is not listed as the last file in a Binder when you attempt to hide all of the files within a Binder. If you attempt to hide all files in a Binder, and the last file is an Excel file, the system displays a Dr. Watson error message. You can hide all the files within a Binder without an error message as long as the last file is not an Excel (*.xls) file. Microsoft Excel 97 * You can initially use the Template wizard to add a Routing Slip. When you attempt to use the Template wizard to add a Routing Slip a second time, the system displays an error message and then the application abnormally terminates. Instead, perform the following steps to add or remove routing recipients: * From the File menu, select Open>File and then New to select the template file. * From the File menu, select Send To and then Other Routing Recipient. You can now add and remove recipients from the template routing list after using the Template wizard. * Although you can use the option Routing Recipient to embed a workbook file in an electronic mail message, do not use the option Other Routing Recipient after that file is routed. Instead, send the file by using the option Routing Recipient from the File>Send To menu. * The Web Toolbar commands are not supported. * Do not use either the MS Access Report Wizard or the MS Access Form Wizard in Excel 97. Excel 97 abnormally terminates if you select either the option MS Access Report Wizard or MS Access Form Wizard from the Data menu, proceed through the wizard, and click on the button Finish. In addition, do not attempt to preview the report in Access 97. Microsoft FrontPage 98 * Rename all versions of the file Mfc42.dll before you attempt to install FrontPage 98. If you do not do so, you cannot successfully install FrontPage 98. Perform the following steps to ensure that you rename all instances of the file Mfc42.dll: 1. Select the menu option Start>Find>Files or Folders. The system displays the Find All Files dialog box. 2. In the Find All Files dialog box, type "Mfc42.dll" in the Named field, and specify the local drive on which you intend to install FrontPage 98 in the Look in field. Click on the Find Now button. 3. For each file named "Mfc42.dll" that is found, select the found file, select the menu option File>Rename, and change the name of the file from "Mfc42.dll" to "Mfc42.old". After you rename all versions of the file Mfc42.dll, you can successfully install FrontPage 98. If you do not rename all versions of the file Mfc42.dll on the local drive before you attempt to install FrontPage 98, the system displays the following message: "FrontPage 98 setup has updated a shared system file to a more recent version. This newer version is required to install FrontPage. To complete the installation of this file, please restart your computer and then restart FrontPage 98 setup." Do not choose to restart the computer, but instead exit the FrontPage 98 Setup, rename the files, and reinvoke Setup. After you install FrontPage 98, rename the file %SystemRoot%\System 32\Mfc42.old back to Mfc42.dll. Note that you only need to do so for the Alpha version of this file which is in the folder \System 32. * When you install FrontPage 98, the system displays an error message similar to the following message: "A read-only file %SystemRoot%\sys32x86\schannel.dll was found while attempting to copy files to the destination location. To overwrite the file, click the Yes button. Otherwise, click the No button." If you receive this error message with a reference to the folder Sys32x86 in the path name, click on the Yes button to overwrite the file. If you receive this error message with a reference to the folder System32 in the path name, click on the No button to avoid overwriting the file. * Perform the following steps if you plan to install the Microsoft Internet Information Server or the Peer Web Server: 1. Install FrontPage 98 according to the previous notes. During the installation, ensure that you do not install the Personal Web Server and Server Extension components. 2. Move the following files (x86 DLL's) from the folder \System to the folder \Sys32x86: + fp30txt.dll + fp30utl.dll + fp30wec.dll + fp30wel.dll + fpwecui.dll 3. Delete the following files from the folder %Installation_Drive%\Microsoft FrontPage\version3.0\servsupp: + fp30msft.dll + fp30nscp.dll + fp30pws.dll + fp30webs.dll 4. Install the Internet Information Server or the Peer Web Server components. 5. Download and install the last known Alpha FrontPage Extensions from the following URL: [11]http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/wpp/exts.htm#win32platforms 6. Move the following files (Alpha DLL's) from the folder %SystemRoot%\System to the folder %SystemRoot%\System32: + fp30txt.dll + fp30utl.dll + fp30wel.dll 7. Register the file %SystemRoot%\Sys32x86\fp30wec.dll. To do so, select the menu option Start>Run, and type the following command in the Open field of the Run dialog box: run regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\sys32x86\fp30wec.dll Where %SystemRoot% is the system root path, for example: C:\Winnt. Microsoft Internet Explorer * The x86 version of Internet Explorer is not supported under DIGITAL FX!32. Use the Alpha version instead, which you can access from the following URL: [12]http://www.microsoft.com/ie/download Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 Active Desktop * The following errors can occur if you attempt to uninstall DIGITAL FX!32 V1.4 while running Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 Active Desktop: * If you select all four uninstallation options in the FX!32 Uninstaller dialog box and click on the OK button, the system displays an error message. You can dismiss this error message. The system successfully uninstalls FX!32 V1.4. * If you select only the options "Delete ALL FX!32 program files" and "Delete FX!32 installation group/folder" in the FX!32 Uninstaller dialog box, the system displays an error message. You can dismiss this error message. The system successfully uninstalls FX!32 V1.4. The Start menu options for the FX!32 program group, however, are not removed. Microsoft Office 97 * Alpha versions of Excel 97 and Word 97 are available, but those applications should not be installed on a system on which x86 Office 97 is also installed. If you require only Excel 97 and Word 97 and you want the full performance available from native Alpha code, install those applications and do not install x86 Office 97. If, however, you require more than those applications, install and run x86 Office 97 under DIGITAL FX!32. * Install Windows Messaging Services before you install either Office 97 or Outlook 97. You can experience errors when using Outlook 97 if Windows Messaging is not installed first. * If you plan to use Microsoft Exchange, select Microsoft Exchange Server Support during the Office 97 installation. * Do not use the shortcut Setup for Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.01 that is placed on the desktop when Office 97 is installed. Right-click on that shortcut and delete it. Instead, install the Alpha version of Internet Explorer. * When Office 97 is installed, the shortcut bar MSDOS button is incorrectly displayed as a question mark (?). Selecting that question mark returns a dialog box that reports the file cmd.exe cannot be found. To correct this, right-click on the icon and select Properties. Click on the shortcut tab, enter the correct path for the file cmd.exe, and refresh the toolbar. * The Setup executable (shortcut) that is located in the Office 97 subdirectory does not execute. Run Setup from the Office 97 CD-ROM in the Control Panel Add/Remove x86 Programs to add, remove, or modify Office 97 components. * If you install the Office 97 Service Release 1 (SR-1), the system displays several error messages during the installation process. Click on the OK button to close each dialog box. The Office 97 SR-1 installs successfully. * Do not insert Wang controls (including Wang Image Admin, Wang Image Annotation, Wang Image Edit, Wang Image Scan, and Wang Image Thumbnail) into Excel, PowerPoint, and Word files. Microsoft Outlook 97 * Install Windows Messaging Services before you install either Office 97 or Outlook 97. You can experience errors when using Outlook 97 if Windows Messaging is not installed first. * If the native Alpha Exchange client is installed on your system as well as Outlook 97, ensure that you select the option Exit and Log Off when you exit either one of these applications. If you select the option Exit from the File menu in either Alpha Exchange or Outlook 97 and not Exit and Log Off, you can encounter problems when you attempt to invoke the other application. * If you configure Outlook 97 to use Microsoft Mail, some attachments to email messages may become corrupt. If the email message recipient reports this problem, use another mechanism to make the file available. Microsoft Outlook 98 * This application is not supported. Microsoft PowerPoint 97 * Do not use the Genigraphics function in PowerPoint 97. For example, do not attempt to send a file through the Genigraphics Link. * Do not open files from the Web Toolbar drop-down list. Doing so can cause the application to abnormally terminate. Microsoft Publisher 98 * You cannot install the Web Publishing Wizard. For example, if through the Install x86 Applications Utility you attempt to run the Desktop shortcut "Setup for Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard 1.52" or if you browse the Publisher 98 CD-ROM for the file Webpost.exe, the installation appears to begin but does not successfully complete. * Do not attempt to change the object associated with an inserted link if you used the menu option Edit>Paste Special to insert it. If you select the menu option Edit>Paste Special to paste data copied from another file, select the option Paste Link, and click on the OK button, the data is pasted into Publisher 98 as a linked object. If you select the menu option Edit>Links, select the object in the Edit Links dialog box, click on the button Change Source, and browse for a file, Publisher 98 abnormally terminates. As a workaround, to insert data from another file, use the menu option Insert>Object and select the option Create from File in the Insert object dialog box. Then, you can browse for the file, click on the Link button and then click on the OK button. You can modify the inserted file by selecting the menu option Edit Links, selecting the object, and clicking on the option Change Source. Microsoft Word 97 * The Web Toolbar commands are not supported. 7.
